14 Million Connections. 14 Million Stories. Backing Australian Ambition.
Behind every connection is a story, and Professor Mimi Zou's is one of curiosity, community and global impact.
A first-generation Chinese Australian, Mimi migrated to Australia at the age of seven. When she arrived, she couldn't speak a word of English and was navigating a new country, culture and family life.
Growing up in Campsie, she experienced firsthand the power of multicultural Australia and the opportunities that come from living between two cultures. It shaped her worldview and instilled a deep appreciation for diversity, community and the value of bringing different perspectives together.
An exceptional student and natural leader, Mimi embraced every opportunity available to her. From student leadership roles, community organisations and youth advocacy, she discovered early that she could create meaningful change, not just within her school but in the wider community.
Today, Professor Zou is a world-leading expert in artificial intelligence, law and technology. She is Head of School of Private and Commercial Law at UNSW, a Visiting Fellow at Oxford and a trusted advisor to governments, international organisations and global institutions, including the G7, World Economic Forum, World Bank and the UK Government.
Throughout her career, she has championed the responsible development of emerging technologies, founded Oxford's first lawtech innovation lab and actively mentors and supports the next generation of women, founders and global leaders.
Her journey reflects the very best of Australian ambition – embracing opportunity, backing yourself and using your success to create pathways for others.
As Mimi says, "Our differences make us stronger. Where you start should never limit where you can go."
Story 3 of 14. Over 14 days, we're celebrating 14 extraordinary Australians whose journeys showcase Australian ambition and the power of our global connections.
As we approach the end of the financial year, we'll also be raising funds for the Global Australians Foundation, a DGR-endorsed charity helping disadvantaged Australians pursue their ambitions.
Because when Australians back Australians, extraordinary things happen.
Go further together.
