14 Million Connections. 14 Million Stories. Backing Australian Ambition.
Behind every connection is a story, and Tirana Hassan's is one of action, justice and a belief that every one of us can make a difference.
Born in Singapore, Tirana moved to Adelaide at the age of three, where she attended school and developed the values of fairness, justice and service that would shape her life and career.
For more than two decades, she has worked on the frontlines of some of the world's most pressing crises and led global organisations dedicated to protecting human rights and delivering humanitarian assistance.
Today, Tirana is one of the world's leading human rights and humanitarian advocates. She is Chief Executive Officer of Doctors Without Borders (Médecins Sans Frontières) USA, following her tenure as Executive Director of Human Rights Watch.
Reflecting on the values that have guided her career, Tirana says: "I think growing up and being educated in Australia left me with a very strong sense of what's right and what's wrong, what's just and what's unjust. It all comes back to that idea of fairness and being able to have a fair go."
From Adelaide to some of the world's most complex humanitarian crises, Tirana's story demonstrates the impact Australians can have when they combine conviction with action, purpose and a commitment to making a difference.
Story 9 of 14. Over 14 days, we're celebrating 14 extraordinary Australians whose journeys showcase Australian ambition and the power of our global connections.
As we approach the end of the financial year, we're also raising funds for the Global Australians Foundation, a DGR-endorsed charity helping disadvantaged Australians pursue their ambitions.
Because when Australians back Australians, extraordinary things happen. Go further together.
